After the disappointing result against Enfield two days earlier, we were looking for a much better performance and we certainly got that, as the Woods played the best football since I became Suburban manager. They started the game playing some lovely one- and two-touch football and the wide men were delivering the ball into some great areas.
However, we gave away another needless yet dubious free-kick, which Tonbridge capitalised on and scored the opener. However, with the wind in Woods’ favour, a long ball was misjudged by the Tonbridge keeper and Romaine Walker stole in to score the equaliser to make it 1-1 at half time.
The second half started with the home side on the back foot, as the wind was against them, and Northwood conceded a needless penalty which keeper Dowsett saved. However, the players did not heed the half-time team-talk about not giving away silly free-kicks, and Tonbridge scored from a thirty-yard free- kick to make it 2-1.
Northwood’s heads never dropped, and with Sharples and Williamson starting to show their quality in midfield, they put their opponents under intense pressure, and it was no surprise when Walker scored his second of the game to draw his side level. It was all Northwood now, but Tonbridge again scored to make to take a 3-2, then another long kick upfield saw the defence split, and Woods were 4-2 down. But still Northwood kept playing their football, and Walters’ goal brought the score back to 4-3. However, time ran out and the Woods just could not find the equaliser.
Nevertheless, the performance was 100% better than in the Enfield game, and I was really pleased with our application to the game, and if we keep playing like this the future is bright. I don’t like to single out players, but Williamson, Sharples and Williams were the top performers. However, the whole squad showed tremendous attitude, which pleased me the most.
